Blasphemous

Ugly duckling: Enter the Matrix, Path of Neo

Ugly duckling is a series of posts talking about games that could’ve been great, but were not.

Some licensed tie-in games are loved, some are forgotten. Some are fun to play, some are not. Some are very budget minded and simple, some are ambitious. The games based around The Matrix were ambitious and quite curious. Though, perhaps, the most successful and arguably fun of them was The Matrix Online, that I won’t be talking about here. Still, both action titles in the franchise – Enter the Matrix and The Matrix: Path of Neo, – were games I was considering replaying for a while now. Intrigued if I will like them more than I did back when they just came out. And I suppose I did. Though, not by much.

Enter the Matrix, Path of Neo

The Matrix: Path of Neo,

O tempora: Castlevania Advance Collection

O tempora is a series of retrospective posts where I play games from ages before to see if they stood the test of time.

Well, this was unexpected. After spending years locked to Game Boy Advance, a console that most people nowadays probably don’t have or use anymore, Konami has decided to release the Castlevania entries made for that console for modern platforms and most importantly PC. Oh and the SNES port of Rondo of Blood as well, for some reason. Unfortunately, this isn’t some extremely complicated NightDive Studios remaster or what Square Enix did with the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster collection. This is just a collection of original game ROMs, wrapped in a nice emulation package with a few extras thrown in. Luckily, it’s a well made collection and playing these titles is a joy.

Castlevania Advance Collection

Happy about: NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139…

I’ve tried playing NieR (Gestalt) when it first came out years ago, but just like it happened with Drakengard even earlier, I got bored with the game. So it wasn’t until slightly later that I’ve learned about how inventive the storytelling in NieR becomes, how the game twists your perceptions with the second playthrough and just how intentional a lot of the boredom I’ve felt was. Years later, NieR: Automata came out and was absolutely fantastic, doing a lot of the same concepts, but in a much more fun way. And given its success, I expected that it was only a matter of time NieR will get a modern re-release. NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… turned out to be much more than a simple re-release.

NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139…

Но NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139…

O tempora: BloodRayne: Terminal Cut

O tempora is a series of retrospective posts where I play games from ages before to see if they stood the test of time.

While third person shooters were a thing throughout the 90s, it wasn’t until Max Payne in 2001 when the genre suddenly clicked. It had all of the speed and energy of a late 90s FPS’, but didn’t feel like a bizarre third person mod to one and had its controls and animations tweaked to feel great. Many games followed using a similar formula. PC-centric ones, like Max Payne itself, kept it all really fast and mouse controlled. Console-centric ones tried to adapt the speed and agility to the controller. Many failed to be fun or memorable. BloodRayne, originally from 2002, was one of the fun ones.

BloodRayne: Terminal Cut

Thoughts on: Red Dead Redemption II

I’ve played Red Dead Redemption less than 10 years ago and despite considering it one of the best Rockstar Games’ titles at that point and a new benchmark for open world action titles, I didn’t love it all that much. It was too long, especially with the terrible Mexico chapter being completely pointless, its player controls were often annoying, despite looking good and it had lots of constant tiny annoyances, most of which were a mainstay in Rockstar’s titles. Still, I was very interested in trying out Red Dead Redemption II, just not enough as to borrow a current gen console from a friend. Now that the PC version is out and patched to work fine (at least for singleplayer, I didn’t even try Online and don’t ever plan to), I’ve given it a go. And… yeah, I didn’t enjoy it much. Yet, it was an experience that I was glad to try.
