Happy about: Amnesia: The Bunker

The influence of Frictional Games on the direction horror themed games took over the past 16 years is undeniable. Their initial Penumbra tech demo from 2006 was a surprisingly fresh take on an adventure genre, with stealth and action aspects, physically-based puzzles and interactions and surprisingly solid horror atmosphere. All of which was developed further into Penumbra: Overture, the only game from the studio until now that was adhering to the pillars of the classic survival horror, focusing not only on exploration, adventure elements and stealth, but also allowing you to deal with enemies directly via combat and traps. But beginning with Penumbra: Black Plague, the team set a mission for themselves to make great narrative-driven titles and to achieve that, the survival horror mechanics had to go.

After achieving great and unexpected success with Amnesia: The Dark Descent, team followed it up with no less great SOMA. Two fantastic story-driven horror themed stealth adventure games that always prioritized good atmospheric experience over the mechanical aspects of the gameplay. Then, just over two years ago, they’ve decided to revisit the Amnesia “brand” with the incredibly mediocre Amnesia: Rebirth – a game that went really far into the narrative, but without making it particularly engaging or interesting to experience. Amnesia: The Bunker seems like a direct reaction to that as it is the return to beginning and a curious attempt to reimagine what classic survival horror gameplay could be, while staying easily recognizable.

Amnesia: The Bunker

Thoughts on: Amnesia: Rebirth

Ever since the tech demo of Penumbra back in 2006 there hasn’t been a time when I was not excited for what Frictional Games would do next. All of their prior games were surprising, unexpected, often inventive. Even if they weren’t very good (like Penumbra: Requiem), there was something daring and weird, something clever and intriguing about every single one of them. Which is why it’s so shocking to admit just how uninspired and generic Amnesia: Rebirth is.

Amnesia: Rebirth

Amnesia: Rebirth.

O tempora: Penumbra series

O tempora is a series of retrospective posts where I play games from ages before to see if they stood the test of time.

The influence of Penumbra series is often understated. Overshadowed by the success of the next projects by Frictional Games. The original Penumbra tech demo from 2006 wasn’t the first horror themed title to be in first person. Neither it was the first to emphasize stealth and puzzle solving over action elements. It might’ve not even been the first to work like a first person adventure game with physically interactive objects, since Trespasser (based on Jurassic Park) exists. Yet, in many ways, this changed how first person perspective horror themed games would work from there on.

And I had very fond memories of the games, apart from respect. Returning to them was a bit scary. And the fears turned out to be justified.

Penumbra

In love with: SOMA

Time is a curious thing. 2006, the Penumbra tech demo and a completely different me. Today it all feels so far away. So many changes, so many things to happen, choices to make, emotions to feel. It’s 5 years since Amnesia: The Dark Descent. 2 since A Machine for Pigs (even though it wasn’t made by Frictional). Two more versions of me. Would all these versions of myself and me today live together? Would we understand each other? How would that work? Are we defined by our consciousness or something more than that?

С выхода Amnesia: The Dark Descent прошло 5 лет. С выхода A Machine for Pigs (пускай и не от Frictional) – 2 года.

Thoughts on: Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs

Three years ago Amnesia: The Dark Descent took everyone by surprise. When all big budget games decided to ditch the “slow paced” genres and bank everything into the “cinematic” and explosive, a tiny studio called Frictional Games did everything differently and finally got the recognition they’ve deserved ever since Penumbra. After a slow start and very niche horror success it exploded in popularity due to the rise of the “scare cam” let’s players, who loved to scream like children on camera and pretend to be very scared. What once was a niche evolution of horror adventure for a smaller audience became a well known huge hit, something to play on a bet, “the scariest game of all time”.

It’s not surprising then, that after a while a counter reaction followed. “The game isn’t even scary”, “why is it so popular”, “this is so lame and overhyped” and etc. It’s in this climate the “sequel”(not actually a sequel and from a different developer) Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs got released. The game has been just released and already there are thousands of people disappointed in it without even trying it and being shocked that Pigs isn’t The Dark Descent 2 (which will never happen and wouldn’t have happened). Which is especially funny, since in many ways A Machine for Pigs is exactly the kind of game Frictional wanted to do in a while.

Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs

Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs – “полу-сиквел” от другого разработчика, с некоторыми изменениями.
