Revisiting The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Anniversary Edition)

Well, it’s been more than a decade since I’ve played The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim originally and over 8 years since I’ve played the “Legendary Edition” with all of the official DLCs. The “Special Edition” has been released 2 years after that and last year, another 6 years later, the Anniversary Edition got announced and released. The amount of ports and re-releases of Skyrim has long since became a widely known joke… and yet, here I was playing Skyrim again, spending dozens upon dozens of hours on a game that I’ve completed twice before. A game that doesn’t have that much of a compelling storyline or involved and exciting mechanics. Why is it that Skyrim still has a strange addictive charm to it and its legacy is still felt through all of the open world titles released ever since?

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Anniversary Edition)

Disapprove: Wasteland 3 (with DLCs)

Even though I’ve still never gotten in the mood to try and conquer the original Wasteland, as with many other cRPGs of that era, I did enjoy Wasteland 2: Director’s Cut quite a lot. Back then I said that it didn’t feel like a Fallout game not because it couldn’t be one, but because it didn’t want to be one. It had its own take on a post-apocalyptic tactical turn-based RPG that still remains enjoyable today despite some flaws.

Wasteland 3 aims to be… different? Frankly, I’m not sure what it aims to be, but the result is not great.

In love with: Cyberpunk 2077

Years after its announcement and months since its release I’ve decided to give Cyberpunk 2077 a go. Despite owning the game, I didn’t play it not for the obvious reasons of it being horribly buggy at the moment, but out of my usual principle of not playing story-driven games that have DLCs announced for it until said DLCs are out. I don’t like playing story-driven games until they’re “done” and I was willing to wait a year or more, just like I did with The Witcher 3 and it’s DLCs and expansions or recently with The Outer Worlds. But after almost half a year of CDPR spending all of their efforts on patches instead of additional content, I figured that the wait might be a bit too long for my liking and played the game in its 1.21 patch version. What an experience it has been.

Cyberpunk 2077

Happy about: The Outer Worlds (with DLCs)

It’s been a while since The Outer Worlds got initially released, but, as it always happens with me and story driven games with DLCs that happen inside the main story, I tend to not play them until the DLCs are out. And now, a year and a half later they are with Peril on Gorgon releasing late last year and Murder on Eridanos just a few weeks ago.

And I’ve had my hopes pretty low, if I’m completely honest – most of the people I know were very underwhelmed by the game at launch and several of them didn’t even finish it because they got bored. Knowing them, I knew that I had to approach this as something far less exciting and story-driven than a typical Obsidian title and more like a simple RPG, a slightly more nuanced action RPG. And yes, while The Outer Worlds is not full-on Borderlands, it’s more or less Fallout: New Vegas, but somewhat streamlined and simplified in some aspects. And given that I really like New Vegas despite itself, it took me a while to adapt and adjust, before I could start enjoying the game for what it is.

Радуясь: The Outer Worlds (и DLC)

The Outer Worlds, Peril on Gorgon вышедший в конце прошлого года и Murder on Eridanos, который вышел на прошлой неделе.

In love with: Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus

I can’t believe how much I can sometimes enjoy games that are very much “not my thing”, but Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus managed to be that rare exception. It’s a tactical turn-based strategy game mixed with RPG and choose your own adventure elements set, as the title suggests, in the Warhammer 40K universe. And I tend to absolutely suck at strategy games and tend to dislike turn-based combat. Yet, somehow, something about Mechanicus clicked and I couldn’t stop playing it until I was done.

Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus
